CASE STUDY

Modern, user-friendly website improves navigation, usability, and seamless platform integration.

The Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI) is recognized internationally as a credible, authoritative voice that provides education and information for both workers and customers of the portable sanitation industry. The organization’s mission is to support its members’ efforts in making sanitation accessible in places where it is not otherwise available, making the environment a cleaner, safer place.

The Challenge

The PSAI’s existing website was built on the Novi AMS platform, a software solution designed specifically for associations.

While the platform effectively handled gated member content, the PSAI team felt the customer-facing pages and CMS (content management system) interface were clunky and outdated. Making edits and performing simple updates was difficult, and it was especially challenging to add blog posts. The site’s navigation was also poor, and users could easily get lost.

The PSAI’s Executive Director and Communications Director were familiar with and liked the flexibility and user-friendliness of WordPress and the Elementor page builder. They came to us wanting to explore the possibility of building a new front-end site on WordPress while maintaining the Novi AMS platform for their gated member content. Our objective became clear: deliver a modern, easy-to-manage website with improved navigation, clean design and seamless integration with Novi AMS.

Strategy Execution

This project required the collaboration of many individuals from the start. Adventure participated in multiple strategy meetings with PSAI board members to fully understand their vision and goals. Together, we developed a detailed scope of work that focused on building a better user experience, improving backend usability for PSAI’s team and integrating gated content from the existing Novi AMS platform.

One of the project’s biggest challenges was content. The PSAI’s existing site had many pages with redundant content. Our content team performed a complete audit, reviewing every page, condensing information and rewriting it to align with the new sitemap while preserving all important messaging.

For most projects, we only design and proof the core pages before development begins. However, due to the complexity of the integration and the number of stakeholders involved with this project, we opted to proof all site pages in advance. This decision turned out to be incredibly valuable. It allowed the client to identify additional sitemap updates (page additions) early and enabled us to adjust before development was underway.

Our development team then built the new front-end site on WordPress using Elementor, which provided a clean, responsive design with vastly improved navigation. It was built to connect smoothly with Novi AMS, ensuring the existing gated content remained secure and functional.

Coordinating the new site launch was another unique aspect of this project. Because Novi AMS changes could only be made after the new site launched and staging wasn’t possible, precise timing and communication were required. Thanks to careful planning and strong cooperation between the PSAI and Adventure teams, everything went off without a hitch.

The Results

The PSAI now has a modern, easy-to-navigate website that serves leadership, members and the general public. The redesign dramatically improved the user experience while giving the PSAI staff the tools they need to efficiently manage and update content through WordPress and Elementor.

The updated site better reflects the professionalism and authority of the PSAI brand. Internally, the ability to make updates without technical assistance has been a huge win for their team. Externally, visitors benefit from a clearer structure, faster access to resources and an overall more polished experience.

The transition from the old system to the new setup was smooth, and the integration with Novi AMS has continued to function as intended. The PSAI’s leadership has expressed satisfaction with the process and the results, and we’re excited to continue supporting their mission through ongoing web support.
